Was looking for torque for the caster nut. found it was 40 to 50 foot pounds.This didnt fix my problem...its the lower ball joints that I will do tomorrow...The tie rods still needed to be replaced...tons of slack. 16 bucks each for outer tie ends and 28 bucks for the inner ones from T and T auto...ball joints 28 ... On the Focus, the passenger side inner tie rod may be accessed with a small pipe wrench with some success, though it's a real pain getting the right angle and grip. The driver side inner tie rod is nearly impossible to access with a pipe wrench or locking pliers; these rods are on very tight. My solution for the drivers side: 1. The tapered stud of the tie-rod will get stuck in the tapered hole in the knuckle when it's clamped together with the nut. That's why you need joint separators and such to get them apart later. So like lukeman was saying if you apply some downward force on the tie-rod while tightening it, that locking action should help with the spinning.

Install the new tie rod into the control arm. My Moog part came with a tube of thread lock. This is where I used it. Fit the tapered post and tighten down the castle nut. Install a new cotter pin. Now make the adjustment for the toe in. With pliers turn the inner tie rod while measuring to match the distance taken earlier.

I've seen torque specs for the inner tie rod, which I assume are the large (slightly larger than 1 1/5") nut. I can't imagine how it would be possible to gauge the torque on that nut. Do I just tighten it very firmly?
